Altri importanti interventi vennero realizzati intorno al 1660, con il coinvolgimento di Gianlorenzo Bernini.<\/p>\n<p>Ad alimentare le numerose fontane esterne alla residenza un complesso quanto innovativo &#8211; per l&#8217;epoca &#8211; sistema idraulico che si concretizza in una galleria sotterranea lunga seicento metri creata per convogliare l&#8217;acqua direttamente dal fiume Aniene.<\/p>\n<p>Un luogo da sogno ideato per dilettare ospiti illustri e godere della bellezza: non \u00e8 un caso che Franz Liszt abbia tratto ispirazione per le sue composizioni de Les Ann\u00e9es de P\u00e8lerinage dalla Villa d\u2019Este, dove tenne uno dei suoi ultimi concerti nel 1879. A seguito di alterne vicende, dovute a vari passaggi di propriet\u00e0 ed una lunga fase di decadimento, Villa d&#8217;Este diventa dello Stato nel 1915. Dopo il 1944 viene restaurata per riparare i danni causati dai bombardamenti del secondo conflitto mondiale e da allora gli studi e gli interventi migliorativi si sono susseguiti senza sosta.<\/p>\n<p>Il percorso tra le 50 fontane, 100 vasche, 255 cascate e 9.000 metri quadrati di viali &#8211; un tempo arricchito dai reperti archeologici provenienti dalla vicina Villa Adriana &#8211; rivela un complesso programma iconografico. Tra i capolavori di Villa d&#8217;Este, la Grotta di Diana, decorata con mosaici di pietre, stucchi e bassorilievi; le fontane del Bicchierone (realizzata da Bernini), di Europa e di Pegaso sulla quale trionfa la statua del mitico cavallo alato; il viale dei cento zampilli dalle forme antropomorfe che ha fatto da sfondo a numerosi film come il colossal \u201cBen Hur\u201d di William Wyler; la fontana della Rometta con al centro la rappresentazione di Roma e quella dell&#8217;Organo da cui proveniva il suono dell&#8217;omonimo strumento grazie ad un complicato meccanismo ad acqua.<\/p>\n<p>Villa d&#8217;Este ospita inoltre il museo del Libro antico, centro internazionale di studio, conservazione e restauro di documenti librari di ogni epoca.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4>Around<\/h4>\n<p>Tivoli racchiude numerosi tesori del suo prestigioso passato di cui Villa d&#8217;Este \u00e8 solo un esempio. Nella cittadina a soli 31 chilometri da Roma si trovano infatti la Villa Adriana, anch&#8217;essa bene Unesco, e il parco di Villa Gregoriana, creato nel 1826 per volere di papa Gregorio XVI. A 38 chilometri da Tivoli sar\u00e0 possibile conoscere Frascati, il pi\u00f9 suggestivo tra i &#8216;Castelli romani&#8217;, con la lussuosa Villa Aldobrandini. the \u201cFontana del Bicchierone\u201d (Fountain of the Great Glass), made by Bernini, la \u201cFontana di Europa e Pegaso\u201d (Fountain of Europa and Pegasus), dominated by a sculpture of the Mythological winged horse. One of the most amazing example of sculpture and waterworks is the Alley of the Hundred Fountains, depicting anthropomorphic characters, at times frightful, at times funny; this same alley has been the setting of various movies, as for example, the Hollywood Colossal \u201cBen Hur\u201d by William Wyler.<\/p>\n<p>Among others, two other fountains are worth reminding: the \u201cRometta\u201d fountain (Fountain of Rome), representing the glory of the Italian Capital City, and the \u201cOrgano\u201d fountain, from which, thanks to an amazing water mechanism, the sound of an organ could be heard throughout the garden.<\/p>\n<p>Villa d\u2019Este hosts the \u201cMuseum Laboratory of Ancient Books\u201d, an international centre of study, preservation and restoration of books of every age and time.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4>Around<\/h4>\n<p>Villa d\u2019Este is but one of the man treasures Tivoli hides. Only 31 kms away from Rome are Villa Adriana, which was included in Unesco World Heritage List since 2001 and Villa Gregoriana Park, created in 1826 in accordance to Pope Greogorio XVI will.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few kms away lies Frascati, one of the most suggestive \u201cCastelli romani\u201d (literally, \u201cRoman castles\u201d), a group of small cities around Rome, each know for a typical sight or local product. In the case of Frascati, it is the luxuriant Villa Aldobrandini and other noble \u201cpalazzi\u201d and the Baroque cathedral, in addition to the excellent \u201cFrascatella\u201d, a very good wine produced in this area ever since III century
